The Art of Experiencing
"The Art of Experiencing" was inspired by pioneering actor and teacher Konstantin Stanislavsky, whose ideas and unique insights into the craft of acting form the basis of the majority of acting schools today. His approach of fully experiencing a role – rather than portraying a pre-conceived image of an emotion – seems especially relevant today, not only on stage, but for everyone, in everyday situations and interactions.
Stanislavsky was a strong believer in the idea of fully and authentically experiencing each moment on stage anew and therefore truthfully reacting to fellow actors and the environment. The interactive mural was created as a visual reminder of this concept in the hallway of Vancouver based acting school Actorium.
By deliberately placing oneself in the half-circle on the floor and facing forward, the simple act of looking oneself into the mirror becomes a conscious act and experience. Every time a student passes the orange light beam they are encouraged to remember the principles of Stanislavsky's teachings, to be in the moment and act and interact from a place of vulnerability and personal truth.
